The National Museum in Aranđelovac is a complex-type museum that preserves the cultural heritage and movable cultural assets in the fields of archaeology, history, art history, ethnology, and anthropology.
The Museum holds jurisdiction over the Risovača Cave, a first-category natural monument and a cultural property of great importance, as well as over the historic site of Orašac, which is designated as a cultural property of exceptional importance.
The Museum’s experts carry out its core activities — research, study, protection, and presentation of movable cultural heritage — through collections in archaeology, art history, history, ethnology, and anthropology, located across three key sites: Risovača Cave, Orašac, and the main Museum building.
Over the past decades, the Museum’s publishing projects have shed light on numerous topics within the scientific disciplines it covers.
Through children’s workshops and collaboration with primary and secondary schools in Aranđelovac, we strive to bring the fields of cultural and historical heritage and identity studies closer to younger generations.
The National Museum in Aranđelovac was founded by the decision of the Assembly of the Self-Governing Community of Cultural Interests of the Municipality of Aranđelovac, on July 14, 1981, as the Museum of the National Liberation Struggle. Two employed curators used the offices of the National Library in Aranđelovac until moving into the new building.
The construction of the building was completed, and it remains the main facility of the Museum to this day.
Due to its natural value, as well as its great archaeological and paleontological importance, Risovača Cave has been declared a cultural monument of great significance.
The first exhibition in the museum building was a guest exhibition from the Historical Museum in Belgrade.
The first permanent exhibition of the Museum, authored by Zoran Josić, an academic painter who served as the museum’s director until 2000, focused on themes of the National Liberation Struggle in Aranđelovac. The exhibition mainly displayed weapons and objects related to the NOB (National Liberation Struggle).
A significant expansion of all collections began, as a result of the curators’ field research. On July 12, 1991, the Assembly of the Municipality of Aranđelovac adopted a decision to establish the cultural institution “Museum in Aranđelovac”, thus transforming it into a comprehensive institution for the protection of movable cultural heritage.
Risovača Cave, together with 13 hectares of the surrounding area, has been placed under protection as a natural monument of the first category.
A new exhibition space was adapted for the collection of contemporary ceramics within the Department of Art History.
The building was reconstructed and adapted.
The Historic Site of Orašac, that is, the museum complex, was annexed as one of the dependencies of the Museum in Aranđelovac.
The first multimedia exhibition was set up in Orašac.
The construction of the Visitor Center and the Museum of the Paleolithic within the Risovača Cave complex has begun.
