When Frescoes Speak…

The project When Frescoes Speak… is nearing completion. On Tuesday, December 25, the creations inspired by Serbian medieval costume will be ceremoniously presented. Students from city elementary and high schools participated in the creation and decoration of the costumes.

About the Project

The project’s author, Senior Curator and Archaeologist of the National Museum, Olga Starčević:

“The project When Frescoes Speak… is intended for the creative work of children and young people, inspired by current archaeological research of the monumental painted temple on Venčac (Dvorine-Mađarsko Cemetery site), which, based on research results so far, can be associated with the 14th century and one of the rulers from the Nemanjić dynasty as the patron. The project’s main activities were realized through ongoing workshops aimed at familiarizing participants with Serbian medieval fresco painting and encouraging them to reflect on what the frescoes say to each of us.

We focused primarily on observing the characteristics of different costume forms and the reflection of social status on the aesthetics, ornamentation, materials, and colors of the clothing; then, on creating costume reconstructions inspired by depictions in the frescoes of 14th-century Nemanjić endowments; and, finally, on stage presentation.

The primary goal of this project is to strengthen the cultural needs of the young museum audience, stimulate creativity, and encourage diverse expressions through the interpretation of art from a historical era.”

This project was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Tuesday, December 25, 5 p.m., National Museum.
